Just a couple of days after their last match, Saxon Bowlers played an ‘away’ game against Weldon. Despite having previously arranged, verbally, to play this fixture in our usual format, i.e. two teams of 4 players, on two mats, straight through, the Weldon Captain unsettled us by insisting, once there, that we would play 9 ends on one of the two mats, and then swap to the other mat for the final 9 ends, and would not be swayed from her decision.
Other than refusing to play at all, and leaving, or having a fight about it, there was not much option open to us, and so it was reluctantly agreed to play “ their way. “
Both mats were very thin, laid over a parquet wood floor, and played very fast. Saxons found it a struggle to keep their bowls short enough to be on the mats consistently, but valiantly kept trying.
Saxons ‘A’ won only two of the first nine ends, and lost on that mat 3 – 10. After swapping mats the situation in the other nine ends was very similar; a nice score of 5 shots in the sixteenth end kept this result a little closer, but they still lost 7 – 9. ( 10 – 19 overall )
Saxons ‘B’ won five of their first nine ends, but by only one shot each time.
And with Weldon scoring more highly in the four ends that they took, it was a loss again for Saxons by 5 - 10
After changing to the other mat a great win in the eleventh end by 7 shots gave Saxons ‘B’ some hope. Unfortunately they took only one other end apart from that, albeit by 4 shots, and with Weldon claiming the other seven ends it was another loss for Saxons, 11 – 15. ( 16 – 25 overall )
Saxons lost overall then, 26 to 44
Team A : Linda Gill, Ann Cook, Tony Sellick, Roger Gill
Team B : Anna Davies, Jeanette Statham, Kathy Marshall, Roger Bond
