On Thursday 21st November 2024 Saxons played a match ‘at home’ against Swanspool, (Wellingborough). Swanspool having informed us earlier in the week that they were unable to field eight players, it had been agreed that for this match we would play Triples, i.e. three players in each team, but bowling with 3 woods each. This meant that despite having fewer players on the mat, there would actually be more bowls delivered in each end, and so we chose to cut the number of ends played from our usual sixteen to fourteen, to make sure the match would be completed by four o’ clock.
Saxons ‘A’ shared the first nine ends pretty evenly with their Swanspool opponents, with the score at that time being 6 each. After this, however, Swanspool only managed to win one more of the next five ends, while Saxons scored steadily, and with two scores of 4 in the final two ends of the game the result was an impressive win by 19 shots to 7
Saxons ‘B’ on mat 2 had a frustrating start to their game, with all the home players struggling to find their line, and length. It felt almost as if they were playing “away” rather than at home, on an unfamiliar mat, and this caused them much concern. But they kept at their task and, similar to the other team, found themselves tied with Swanspool after nine ends, 7 shots each. The last five ends were a close thing, but with Saxons now a little less anxious a good score of 4 shots in the twelfth end was enough to see them inch over the line by just one point, winning by 13 shots to 12
Saxons won overall, 32 to 19
Team A : Jeanette Statham, Chris Selling, Roger Gill
Team B : Anna Davies, Tony Sellick, David Hill
