Thursday 26th February 2026 saw us heading not too far out of Raunds to play our ‘away’ match at Stanwick.
On their mat, Saxons ‘A’ made a steady start, taking an early small lead, but then traded low-scoring ends with Stanwick so that the advantage went back and fore between them by 1 shot or 2 until, after thirteen ends, they came out even at 9 shots each. The game could have gone either way at this point, but a handy score of 4 shots in the next end put Stanwick in front, bolstered by another 1 shot win in the fifteenth. Saxons ‘A’ rallied in the final end, making a nice score of 3 shots, however they lost the match in the end by just two shots, 12 - 14
Saxons ‘B’ struggled in the first couple of ends to find their length on what seemed to be a fairly slow mat, but soon made some good adjustments, scoring 4 shots in the third end. Three more ends were taken by 2 shot wins with no reply from their Stanwick opponents, so that by the middle of the match Saxons were 11 – 4 ahead.
A score of 3 in the next end, followed by a huge 6 in the twelfth took Saxons well to the front, with what looked like an unassailable lead, 21 – 7, with just three ends left to play. But in a very tense and anxious finale to the match, somehow Stanwick started to score well, and were able to win the two last ends by 5 and 4 !
Saxons ‘B’ were lucky that their lead was just high enough that it not only kept them as winners in this game but also carried us to victory overall by a slim 2 shot margin.
Amazingly, the game really could not have been closer, with the scorecards showing that in both games each team had won 8 of the 16 ends played.
Saxons ‘A’ lost by 12 – 14
Saxons ‘B’ won by 21 – 17
Saxons won overall, 33 to 31
Team A : Carole Bourne, Ann Cook, Tony Sellick, Chris Selling
Team B : Anna Davies, Jeanette Statham, Kathy Marshall, Roger Gill
