Romans - Away. Match Result

Website updated 11-Feb-2025

On Thursday 6th February 2025 Saxons played an ‘away’ match ‘ against the Romans, Irchester. This match was definitely one of two halves, with big scores on both mats; one in favour of Saxons on their mat 1, but unfortunately Romans took the honours on their mat 2 with an even bigger win.

On mat 2, Saxons ‘B’ struggled to score, only winning five of the eighteen ends played. At the start of the game they kept the Romans within sight with a heartening score of 4 shots in the seventh end to make it a respectable 6 – 7. However in the tenth end Romans took a massive score of 6, which made it really difficult to catch up again, and with them winning steadily for the rest of the game, their total soon shot out of range. Saxons ‘B’ ended up losing by 9 shots to 27.

Saxons ‘A’, on mat 1, shared the scoring pretty evenly with their opponents for the first ten of the eighteen ends played, with a 7-all score at that point in the game. But after that Saxons dominated the rest of the match, so much so that Romans did not manage to win any of the last eight ends. Seeing that the situation was reversed on mat 2, where the Romans team was miles ahead, it became paramount that – on their own skip’s admission – mat 1 players simply tried to stop Saxons from racing away too far ahead, in the hope that they could salvage a win overall, which they did. Still, Saxons ‘A’ won by 21 shots to 7.

A rather strange match, with things being so one–sided on both mats. But in a frustrating end result, Saxons only lost overall by 4 shots.

Saxons ‘A’ won by 21 – 7
Saxons ‘B’ lost by 9 – 27
Saxons lost overall, 30 to 34

Team A : Jeanette Statham, Tony Sellick, Roger Bond, Roger Gill
Team B : Linda Gill, Ann Cook, Kathy Marshall, David Hill
