result of match played against romans irchester away on thursday 8th february 2024
On Thursday 8th February, 2024, we visited the Romans, in Irchester, to play an ‘away’ game. The Romans chose to play 18 ends.
We found that the mats there, always a challenge, were double stacked on this occasion, with two mats being placed one on top of the other. But both Saxon teams seemed to find the pace of these ‘double decker’ mats fairly well early on, although not always the line.
Saxons ‘B’ team, on mat 2, started impressively, winning the first five ends to lead 12 – 0. However the Romans came back at us and won the next four ends themselves to make it 12 – 8 half way through the game.
We just about managed to keep our noses ahead in the last 9 ends, even though Romans actually won more of those ends than we did, and finished with a three point win, 20 - 17
On mat 1, Saxons ‘A’ team also started well, winning four of the first five ends. The Romans took the next two ends, and after eight ends the score was tied 7 – 7. Both teams shared the honours in the following eight ends, resulting in the strangely symmetrical tied score of 16 – 16 after 16 ends !
It was a shame that we weren’t playing only 16 ends in the match, as we usually do, because in that case Saxons would have got the win overall.
But, unfortunately, in the penultimate end of their game, Saxons ‘A’ went down by 5 shots, and finished by losing by four shots, 17 - 21

Saxons lost overall then, by just one shot, 37 to 38
